The original 1952 home located in the Chautauqua neighborhood of Boulder had a lot of character but was simply too small for the owners and their growing family. City of Boulder solar shadow requirements and strict site constraints limited the area where the 2nd floor addition could occur. A second story addition housing the new Primary Suite was added and the existing spaces in the home remodeled to provide better flow and more space. A primary goal of the project was to create a final design that did not exemplify the basic “pop-top”. This was achieved by integrating the roof elements, detailing and overall massing of the addition.
